Why colour standards matter

One shared colour reference. Fewer avoidable shade surprises.

Colour specifications help designers, mills, dye houses, garment manufacturers, buyers and quality teams communicate a target shade throughout sampling and production.

Clearer communication

Share a consistent colour reference between teams, suppliers and production partners.

More controlled approvals

Support sample review and shade discussions with physical references suited to the material.

Better material decisions

Choose a reference format that reflects whether the target is textile, coated paper, or printed graphics.

Useful across workflows

Support colour selection from product development through supplier review and quality control.

Choose the right system

TCX, TPG or PMS — what is the difference?

Pantone maintains different colour systems for different materials and workflows. The physical substrate affects how a colour appears, so the reference format matters.

TEXTILE & SOFT GOODS

FHI · TCX Cotton

Textile Cotton references are made on cotton fabric and are suited to apparel, fabric, yarn and other soft-goods colour selection.

  • Fabric and apparel development
  • Shade selection and sample review
  • Colour communication for textile materials
Typical format: a TCX colour reference
PAPER · COATINGS · HARD GOODS

FHI · TPG Paper

Textile Paper – Green references use a coated paper format and help coordinate colour for hard surfaces and coated materials.

  • Leather, coatings and accessories
  • Paint, ceramic and hard-surface products
  • Cross-material colour coordination
Typical format: a TPG colour reference
GRAPHICS & PRINT

Pantone Matching System · PMS

The graphics system is intended for workflows such as print, packaging, branding and spot-colour communication. It is not a replacement for a textile cotton reference.

  • Printed materials and packaging
  • Branding and graphic design
  • Coated and uncoated paper references
Typical format: a PMS graphics reference

Frequently asked questions

Pantone colour standards — FAQs.

What is the difference between TCX and TPG?

TCX refers to Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors cotton textile references. TPG refers to the paper-based Textile Paper – Green references used for coatings and hard surfaces. They are designed for different material contexts.

Should I use a graphics PMS guide to match fabric?

For fabric and apparel, the FHI TCX textile reference is generally the more appropriate starting point. Graphics references serve print and packaging workflows; confirm the right system for the material.

Can a colour on my phone or monitor be used as the final standard?

No. Screens can display colours differently, and on-screen simulations are not a substitute for evaluating an appropriate physical colour standard under suitable lighting.

Can NEXVASTRA confirm current Pantone product codes and availability?

Contact our team with the format or code you need. We will confirm product details, current edition and availability before quotation.
